week 2: positions through iterating

I started this week by flying a kite.

or rather, using my publication as a kite. I enjoyed where I ended up last week, and though initially i was a bit upset with myself for not making a more beautifully produced publication, I reminded myself that I chose this format because it became beautiful through use. then length and its versatility captured the evolution of my journey through the iterations, the spaces I explored in unit 1, wider themes of home, and more broadly, my life.

the shapes and lines these images of my publication flying in the wind reminded me of my map-based iterations, and the fact that the whole first week started to form a self portrait.

another concept I wanted to explore further was this idea of my pangaea, the in between. in my wider practice, being a third-culture kid, I have always found myself exploring the concept of belonging, home, identity, but usually explored it through single countries/cultures.

past work: ‘The two noors’ inspired by frida Kahlo’s ‘the two Friday‘ exploring hybrid identity. one of the first times I’ve portrayed overlapped belonging, but even then, each noor is portrayed as belonging from two distinct cultures.

my pangaea was one of the first times I realised that I am from an between place. this concept was one that a lot of my peers related to because most of them are international students, and they feel caught in between multiple homes.

since a lot of my iterations and explorations revolved around maps, I wanted to explore what other ways of representing places and belonging look like.

I looked to what I’ve done so far in unit 1, and the method of investigating and documenting stickers to tell a story was one that I felt was successful, and something I could apply to this project as well.

I then started to compile text based and visual references.

(talk about each reference here, and lead to the noor route)

add final line of enquiry here.
